Lets do a rare coin book review. Title of the book "A Guide Book of Half Cents and Large Cents - History, Varieties, Populations, and Values". The featured coins in the book are half cents and large cents. The book is written by David Bowers, a popular rare coin collector that has been collecting coins and writing informative rare coin books for over 60 years. He's a well known rare coin consultant and his knowledge has been involved on five of the six most valuable coin collections to ever come to market. These collections include the wonderful Eliasberg collection that was sold in the 1980's. It brought a sale of $55,000,000 in total. Another famous rare coin collection he counsulted for was the Harry W. Bass Collection which brought $60,000,000. Author David Bowers is a leading expert on rare coins and his book about Half Cents and Large Cents is an absolute must for copper coin collecting.
To start, what is really interesting was the complete depth about the Philadelphia Mint which was established in 1792. It was the first mint of the United States and the story gives the reasons why the mint was established and talks about the people who were involved in the deal. The book even has pictures of the 1792 mint in drawings which of course is "very cool!".
Another topic the book talks about is the history of the rare coin marketplace in the 1800's. The book shows what the auction result values for an 1860 rare coin auction sale. For example, a 1793 Half Cent sold for $4.13. ($140 in 2022 dollars) What a fantastic deal!
The book also talks about the grading characteristics of each coin year. It explains all the different die varieties of all half cent and large cent years. That's alot of information! It shows color pictures of every coin ayear and specifically shows what to look for on the obverse and reverse of the coins to determine the variety. Fantastic!
Lets look for a coin in the book. We will pick the 1805 Drape Bust Large Cent. Over three pages, it shows the 3 different varieties of the 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent. It shows how to identify each variety and explains clearly what the differences are with pictures. Its so complete!
The David Bowers Half Cents and Large Cents book is about 550 pages that are jamed with all the information needed to be an expert on early copper coins. Very informative, specific, and perfect for early copper coin collectors. A must have.
